my aims and intentions statement

Zealous will include close up camera shots, along with eye-line of characters, to connect the audience more with their emotions on screen and anything important to the narrative. Panning shots will also appear to create the effect of realism by showing the whole setting. The flashbacks from the moment of the murder will make the pace of the narrative seem fast and sudden, illustrating life being taken away suddenly. The overall pace of the other scenes will be much slower so that the grieving of the characters and overall feel to the narrative is embraced as a prolonged pain, which will reflect sympathy on the audience. Zealous will have continuity editing, excluding the flashbacks at the start, and will include a fade to black shot after the murder to imply the passing of time.

The setting is based in a village. It will include scenes in scarce open fields and woods to capture a sinister, abandoned aura. When the murder happens there will be low key lighting and when nothing seems wrong the lighting will be the average daylight, so that the lighting illustrates the mood of each scene. The main colour palette will be restricted to create a dusk and secretive feel. The costume, hair and make-up of the characters will be minimal so that they look natural and ordinary, which the audience could relate to.

Zealous will have a non-diegetic soundtrack of slow eerie, tense music, and I will also use minimal direct dialogue.

I am targeting an active audience in education, as they usually look for something that gives them a challenge whilst also entertaining and interesting. I am aiming at an audience of explorers and 18-35-year-old millennials, which are about to become the most educated generation yet, making a puzzling and exciting crime drama a perfect option for them.

One of the key elements of a crime drama is verisimilitude, where the audience recognise the representations of 'ordinary' people in an everyday environment. I am going to film scenes on everyday lives and environments, to create realism for the audience. The stereotypical character type of a female victim will appear in the programme appealing to a traditionalist audience, however, the empowered number of female main roles will also become a unique selling point, and appeal to a more feminist society. Following David Gauntlett’s theory, the audience then have a diverse range of character types to pick and mix ideas from to create their own identity.

My crime drama is called 'Zealous'. This relates to someone spending a lot of time and energy in supporting something that they believe in. I will portray this through a diegetic, asynchronous voiceover. The programme will show on ITV. I will create a fictional audio-visual sequence of a key turning point in the narrative. The length of the sequence will be between 2½-3 minutes.

The magazine article is linked to my audio-visual through the character of the killer. It will include a double page spread of an interview from the actor who played them, who will also be the face of the front cover along with several cover lines, a couple being associated around the show. I will create a contemporary, sophisticated brand identity to appeal to the target audience and also reflect the industry context.
